Leelanau UnCaged: Where Art, Music and Community Meet
This weekend, I had the pleasure of attending Leelanau UnCaged in Northport, Michigan, and it was everything I had hoped for and more. Every year, on the last Saturday of September, the picturesque village of Northport, Michigan, bursts into life as Leelanau UnCaged takes over its streets. This lively festival is free, thanks to the many volunteers and generous donations. It is is a one-of-a-kind celebration of Northern Michigan’s vibrant arts, music, food, and new to this year’s festival, dance scene. What started in 2013 as a grassroots event has blossomed into a beloved tradition, attracting artisans, musicians and attendees from all over the region.
Here's what stood out to me during my day at the festival:
1. Incredible Live Performances
Music was at the heart of the festival, with multiple stages offering everything from folk to world music. I caught some amazing indie bands and even watched a few lively dance performances. The energy was contagious, and no matter what kind of music you love, there was something to enjoy at every corner of Northport. With the sun shining and good company all around, it was a beautiful reminder of the magic that live music can bring to any space.
2. Artisan Booths Galore
It was a perfect day to explore the creativity of Northern Michigan’s artisans and connect with the vibrant community. For someone who loves handmade products and attending arts and craft shows, the vendors were on top of it on Saturday. Over 30+ talented local artisans displayed their handcrafted goods, from beautiful jewelry to ceramics and textiles. I found some truly unique pieces, and it was inspiring to see the level of creativity and craftsmanship Northern Michigan is home to.
3. Community Spirit
Leelanau UnCaged is more than just an arts festival—it's a celebration of community. I could feel the spirit of togetherness as I wandered through the festival, from the friendly volunteers who kept everything running smoothly to the visitors who came together to celebrate local talent and good food. It was heartwarming to see how the festival brings everyone together after the busy tourist season.
4. Family-Friendly Fun
Leelanau UnCaged offers a rich blend of activities that cater to all ages, making it a wonderful event for the whole family.
